The best time to lay sod in Florida — and how to keep it alive in August
Florida sod can go down year round. Summer just means the watering schedule stops being optional.
Unlike northern climates, Florida has no closed sod season. Warm-season grasses root year round here — the variable is water, not the calendar.
Summer installs actually root fastest because soil temperatures are high and afternoon rain helps. The risk is that a missed day in 95-degree heat can brown a whole pallet.
The first two weeks decide everything. Water deeply twice a day, morning and midday, keeping the soil under the sod damp — not just the blades wet.
Weeks three and four you back off to once daily, then to a normal deep-and-infrequent schedule. Shallow daily watering forever produces shallow roots.
Grass choice matters more than timing. Floratam St. Augustine handles most sunny Tampa lawns, Zoysia gives a finer blade and better wear, Bahia is the low-input choice for big lots.
None of it works over bad prep. Old lawn killed out, graded for drainage, tilled and amended — then fresh-cut sod laid tight with staggered seams the same day it's harvested.
