Landscaping & pavers in Ruskin, FL

Ruskin is where two of our most-photographed jobs are — a retaining wall and a paver walkway.

Ruskin lots don't look like the rest of Hillsborough. Some back onto farmland, some onto the Little Manatee River or bay water, and many are bigger than anything in the newer subdivisions. That freedom comes with problems: soil that washes, lots that drop off, and runoff from open land next door.

Our retaining wall sequence and paver walkway in the gallery were both built in Ruskin, so this is ground we know.

Neighborhoods we work in

The homes here

A mix of older rural homes on large lots, riverfront properties, and a growing number of new subdivisions. Agricultural land still borders many properties — tomato fields and nurseries are part of the landscape here. Older homes often have no formal drainage at all.

Soil, storms and base prep in Ruskin

Where a lot sits beside open or farmed land, water arrives from the neighbor's side during summer storms and cuts channels through beds and lawns. On sloped ground toward the river, soil migrates downhill. That's the situation the retaining wall we built here solved: a compacted base, geogrid where needed, and drainage behind the wall so water doesn't push it over. For walkways, the base has to be deeper and edge-restrained so sandy soil doesn't wash out from under the pavers.

Permits & HOAs

Ruskin is unincorporated Hillsborough County. Older rural parcels usually have no HOA; the newer subdivisions do. Riverfront and wetland-adjacent lots may have environmental setbacks. Taller retaining walls may need engineering, which we'll flag up front.

Is a retaining wall overkill for my yard?

Sometimes it is, and a drainage fix or regrade is enough. The job pictured here genuinely needed one — the slope was losing soil every storm. We'll tell you honestly which you need.
