Travertine pool decks: why Tampa homeowners keep choosing them
Cool underfoot, slip resistant when wet, and it doesn't look manufactured. The case for travertine — and where it isn't the answer.
Pool decks are the one surface people walk on barefoot in July. That single fact drives most of the material decision in Florida.
Travertine stays measurably cooler than concrete and most concrete pavers because of its density and light natural color. On a 95-degree afternoon that difference is the whole experience.
The honed, unfilled surface is naturally slip resistant when wet, which matters more around a pool than anywhere else on the property.
It also ages well. Travertine is a natural stone with variation baked in, so weathering reads as character instead of fade.
Where it isn't the answer: heavy vehicle loading. Driveways are better served by a dense concrete paver in herringbone.
Whatever the material, the deck has to pitch away from the pool shell, and where the yard can't absorb runoff, deck drains need to be tied to a real discharge point. Standing water at the coping is a base problem, not a cleaning problem.
